  • The original Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship that is said to never be able to make port, doomed to sail the seas forever. The story of the Flying Dutchman is believed to have originated in the 17th century, the golden age of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and the heightening of Dutch maritime power.

The most common version of the legend involves a Dutch captain named Van der Decken, who was determined to round the Cape of Good Hope during a storm, even if it meant sailing until the end of time. He swore to reach land even if he had to sail until the Day of Judgment, which led to the curse of the Flying Dutchman. The ship is destined to sail for eternity without ever reaching land.

This directly inspires the movie Pirates of Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End. The ship is captained by Davy Jones, a powerful and enigmatic figure who was once a mortal sailor but is now cursed to ferry the souls of those who died at sea to the afterlife.

In sailors' legends, the Flying Dutchman is a terrifying ghost ship with a barnacled crew that rises from the ocean depths. Its appearance is eerie, with its sails glowing like fire and its rigging draped in seaweed.

Its rigging consists of three masts, with a unique combination of square and lateen sails. The ship originally had a bowsprit with two square spritsails, but after it was broken, a new bowsprit was placed above the ship's figurehead. The stern of the ship is covered with lamps and windows arranged in a fanged mouth pattern, and the deck above is intertwined with the skeletons of sea beasts.

The hull of the Flying Dutchman is made of driftwood, encrusted with barnacles and aquatic flora and fauna. After the curse on the ship was broken, it was revealed that the hull was actually made of gold and bronze. The ship's cannons emerge from ports in the hull, which take the form of sea demons with wide gaping mouths. The ship's main armament consists of twenty 36-pound cannons and eighteen 24-pound cannons, supplemented by 3-pounders on the quarterdeck and forecastle.

The prow of the ship resembles a fanged mouth, with a figurehead resembling the Grim Reaper and his scythe. The sails of the Flying Dutchman are white but ragged, with multiple holes, likely from its trips to the ocean's depths. The Flying Dutchman is considered one of the most powerful ships in the Caribbean, with its primary weapons being 24-pounders and 36-pounders.

The ship is incredibly fast, even when other ships are becalmed. The Flying Dutchman's beams are said to sigh with the weight of a century of weary toil, and sailors who fall overboard and are doomed to drown are given the option to serve on the ship. The French Pirate Lord Chevalle even called it "Le monster des profondeures," the monster from the deep.

The Flying Dutchman is not a natural ship, as it can sail against the wind and maintain its speed even in a hurricane. It weighed 420 tons and was 170 feet long, with 46 cannons and two triple-barreled chase guns. It was considered the fastest ship both on and beneath the sea, but it was unable to keep up with the Black Pearl when the latter had a following wind.

The Flying Dutchman's most potent weapon was the Kraken Hammer, which was used to summon the Kraken from the depths to destroy its enemies. The ship was the only one immune to the Kraken's destructive rage.

Ithas a rich history that is intertwined with the character of Davy Jones. According to the lore of the series, Davy Jones was once a mortal sailor who fell in love with the sea goddess Calypso. In exchange for her love, he agreed to ferry the souls of those who died at sea to the afterlife for ten years.

However, when the ten years were up, Calypso did not show up to meet him as they had agreed. This betrayal caused Davy Jones to become bitter and enraged, and he abandoned his duty to ferry the souls of the dead. As a result, he and his crew became cursed, and the Flying Dutchman became a ghostly ship that roamed the seas, never making port.

The Flying Dutchman is a formidable vessel, with a unique design that includes a large, barnacle-encrusted hull and a distinctive bowsprit in the shape of a trident. The ship is crewed by a group of cursed sailors who have been transformed into various sea creatures, including fish-men, crustaceans, and other aquatic beings.

Throughout the Pirates of the Caribbean series, the Flying Dutchman plays a major role in the story, with its captain, Davy Jones, serving as a central antagonist. The ship is involved in several epic battles and plays a key role in the events that unfold in the series.
